Save output of command to variable bash

OUTPUT="$(ls -1)"
echo "${OUTPUT}"

MULTILINE=$(ls \
   -1)
echo "${MULTILINE}"

password=$(openssl rand -base64 32)
echo $password

Store printed output in variable bash
